An Indian Folk Painting: Gajalakshmi

$165.00 USD

mid twentieth century
6 1/4" x 9 3/4", 16 cm x 25 cm

This is a small, well-detailed folk painting depicting the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity and abundance, Lakshmi, depicted in the form of Gajalakshmi.

Gajalakshmi is shown as flanked by two elephants that are raining water down upon her, a symbolic drenching that is linked to a wish for good rain for crops and to convey hope for abundance. Lakshmi herself is richly clad in red and is bejeweled. She sits on a lotus blossom.

The small painting is has some surface abrasion and, as folk paintings go, it is in good, used condition.

A little jewel, loaded with spiritual significance and lots of good luck.
