A Nineteenth Century Sake Flask or Tokkuri: Splashed Glazes
mid to late nineteenth century
10 1/4" x 3 1/4", 26 cm x 8 cm
This sake flask or tokkuri shows as an elegant form with an unusual and appealing splashing of two tones of glaze on its body.
The kiln origin of this tokkuri is unknown but there is speculation it could be from Tamba or Kyushu--and it is said to be from the mid to late 19th century.
The top portion, the mouth of the flask is entirely coated in one of the two glaze colors that is flung on the body of the tokkuri, presumably to help the flow of sake from the flask.
The decoration on its body is random and and left to happenstance, and happenstance is one of the great determiners of the the beauty of any handmade ceramic vessel or object.
Its condition is perfect with no nicks, cracks or loss and, as such, this makes for an object to use and enjoy what will hopefully be its long, serviceable life.
