A Handmade Well-Worn Japanese Wooden Box: Bicycle Repair

$125.00 USD

early twentieth century
14 1/2" x 12" x 4", 37 cm x 30.25 cm x 10 cm

This handmade, rustic wooden box from old Japan is said to have come from a bicycle repair shop, or probably more precisely, from an itinerant bicycle repair person who may have traveled with this box. It seems to have been used for materials storage.

The dark wood box is simply constructed and is slightly battered; it shows a very nice patina from wear. It also shows a good number of metal tacks hammered onto the front frame of the box which add visual appeal.

This folk object has easy applications for the home as it would be good for display, or to use to store mail or as a catch all.

A lovely thing.
