A Beautifully Complex Length of 19th Century Plaid: Hand Spun Cotton

$75.00 USD

late nineteenth century
66 1/2" x 13", 169 cm x 33 cm

This is a length of beautifully designed and hand woven cotton cloth which seems to be made from hand spun yarns.  This length is rich in what the Japanese call "thread flavor" or ito aji, a desired characteristic when collecting folk textiles. The colors are indigo, white and a pale yellow.

Look carefully at the attached detail photos to see the wonderfully complex nature of the plaid; within the dense squares of indigo and white, the warp and weft yarns come together to form a houndstooth pattern and the overall woven pattern is dense with detail.

In good, used condition, this length shows good color and good texture.

Recommended.
