A Length of Kumanozome: OpArt Moire Stenciled Cotton

This is a generously sized length of a wonderful old type of stenciled cotton known as Kumanozome.

Kumanozome refers to a place of origin, an area near present-day Okayama Prefecture: Kumano is well-known for producing this type of optically entrancing cloth.  

Kumanozome is immediately recognizable for its decidedly "Op Art" moire effect of undulating, crossing lines. Sometimes contrasting colors and values were used to heighten this effect as is this one which is dyed in red and indigo toned dyes.

This good-sized was taken from a futon cover. There are about three noticeable holes (shown here in detail) and some small surface snags to the cloth, also shown. As can also be seen and expected, the cloth is slightly faded from wear and its surface has slight, overall abrasion which has softened the original color from bold to gentle.

A lovely, collectible piece of distinctly dyed cotton from old Japan in good, used condition.
