A Length of Katazome Cotton: Large Scale Indian Inspired Pattern
late nineteenth century
36" x 13 1/4", 91.5 cm x 33.5 cm
This length of katazome dyed cotton shows a repeat pattern of what appear to be Indian inspired fantasy flowers against a background of arabesque, or karakusa, as it is called in Japan.
The design is large in scale and the repeat is regular: the design is enhanced by pale grey coloring, judiciously placed.
There is a button-sized hole and a smattering of small pitting to the cloth, along with some overall wear that shows the creases to the cloth when it was part of futon cover (shown here) but otherwise this length of hand spun, hand woven cotton is in fairly good, used condition.
