A Length of Hand Spun, Hand Woven Katazome Dyed Cotton: Classic Pattern
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
58" x 13", 147.5 cm x 33 cm
This length of hand spun, hand woven cotton is of very good texture and is dyed in the katazome method.
It shows a rather classic design of stylized chrysanthemums against a background of arabesque. The type of blue-on-white katazome as this one is is called jishiro and is less seen than the white-on-blue type.
The indigo is a bit greyed and softened by time which is a nice feature, and the handspun cotton yarns add a texture that is what you want to see if you are collecting old folk textiles.
The length is starched so it is slightly stiff, however overall the condition is good and the base cloth is of very good quality, and this is a plus.
