A Length of Zanshi ori Cotton: Patches
early twentieth century
60" x 13 1/4", 152.5 cm x 33.5 cm
Zanshi ori is cloth that is woven from threads either leftover from home production of yarn making, or from broken threads that were purchased from local commercial weavers. Usually the weft is fed with these random threads while generally the warp is regulated producing an irregular horizontal 'striping'; if home threads are used, knotted slubs can often be seen.
This length is handsomely colored and designed, and it shows zanshi ori's characteristic random bands of horizontal striping. As well, there are four smallish patches that add contrast and visual interest to the already-visually interesting length.
This is a good looking length of zanshi ori and is one that has a classic format.
Very attractive.
