A Three Panel Resist Dyed Noren: Traditional Door Cover

$165.00 USD

mid twentieth century
61" x 38", 155 cm x 96.5 cm

This is a resist dyed, machine stitched cotton noren which is a doorway covering.

Noren are often hung in tront of a building and can be used as a shop sign: when the noren is displayed the shop is open. In the case of this one we see a family name "Yamada" which could mean this was taken from some kind of shop, restaurant or business.

It is made of heavy--almost canvas-weight--cotton which is dyed or colored in what appears to be a kind of pigment-based brown-toned dye.

There are scuffs to the surface and some evidence of wear, but this noren is still in good, used condition and is ready to be displayed or used once again.

Very nice.
