A Very Faded Tattered Tsutsugaki Furoshiki: Hand Spun Cotton Yarns

$95.00 USD

late nineteenth century
38" x 37 1/2", 96.5 cm x 95 cm

The fading, the wear and the hand spun cotton yarns that characterize this furoshiki or traditional wrapping cloth all make this for a beautifully authentic Japanese folk textile.

The cotton is obviously old and hand woven. The central image is wonderfully rendered in the tsutsugaki motif and shows stylized ivy surrounded by two circles, both resist dyed.

The cotton is super faded and the corners are tattered from use. There is also a faint but prominent stain, pictured.

But pay attention to a strange detail: on each of its two sides there are two home made button holes--a seriously unusual addition to a traditional wrapping cloth.

Beautiful for its texture and its soulfulness this is a lovely and quite old Japanese folk textile.
