A Resist Dyed Furoshiki: Three Large Flowers and Subtle Mending

$275.00 USD

early to mid twentieth century
38" x 40", 97 cm x 102 cm

A furoshiki is a traditional Japanese carrying cloth, usually square-ish in format, and it is used to wrap, haul and store household items.

This is a particularly nice one that shows three large, resist-dyed stylized cherry blossoms clustered in the center of the cloth.

The cotton is hand woven from hand spun yarns and it is dyed a beautifully clear medium-toned indigo color. There is hand stitching running up the two sides of the cloth.

As well there are small islands of finely stitched repairs scattered in the blue areas, some of which are shown on the detail photos that accompany this post. The center of the cloth is also slightly distended from wear.

A very good looking old furoshiki made of wonderful, hand spun cotton yarns and with an upbeat presence.

Recommended.
