A Length of Shibori Dyed Cotton: Stream and Flowers

$30.00 USD

early to mid twentieth century
26" x 14", 66 cm x 33.5 cm

This is a length of indigo dyed cotton shibori that was produced in Arimatsu, one of the towns in Aichi prefecture that was a leading producer and innovator in the production of shibori.

The pattern shows lazy, undulating blue areas that are studded with flowers, the effect is meant to evoke spring when streams are babbling and blossoms from trees fall onto the surface of the meandering water. This pattern was meant to have a "cooling" effect.

The is dyed onto a length of commercially loomed, fairly lightweight cotton and is in good, used condition. Please note the light, smudged stain as shown on the accompanying detail photo.
