A Length of Patched Northern Shibori: Lovely Motifs
early twentieth century
63" x 13 1/2", 160 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of patched and mended indigo dyed shibori that is of a type called Asamai, the location of its making is in Akita prefecture.
The pattern is beautiful and owes its attractiveness to the patches and stitching which are overlaid on the base cloth that shows sewn and tied shibori stars, leaves and circles.
The color is a dull indigo, probably oxidized over time and the cloth, although more than likely hand woven of hand spun cotton yarns is fairly lightweight and finely woven.
The effect of the mending to this piece is a sheer delight for the eyes and that this cloth is from the northeastern, rural part of Japan makes it even more attractive.
