A Length of Hand Pleated Shibori: Broken Parallel Lines

$85.00 USD

early to mid twentieth century
61 1/2" x 13 1/4", 156 cm  x 33.5 cm

What a lovely length of hand made, indigo dyed shibori and one that is dyed in a complex technique.

This piece, undoubtedly from Narumi/Arimatsu, seems to be a type that was pleated, the technique being called fukuzo suji shibori.  The semi-broken vertically dyed lines as shown are due to the pleated fabric having been bound by string before being vat dyed.

In good, used condition, this length shows some ingrained creases and needle punctures from its former life as a yukata or an unlined summer kimono.

It is a really handsome length of hand dyed shibori and a type of shibori that is desirable for its blue-on-white pattern and for the difficult technique.

Beautiful.
