An Unworn Raw Silk Kasuri Kimono: Crisp Tsumugi
mid twentieth century
shoulder to hem x sleeve tip to sleeve tip: 61" x 50", 155 cm x 127 cm
This crisp and pristine kimono is made of tsumugi silk or as some might say, "raw" silk. The silk has texture.
The kimono has not been worn and its material is almost papery in feel because it is unused. Some basting stitches can still be found on some of the seams which also lets us know this was not yet worn.
The design of the cloth is a beautiful kasuri pattern done mainly in a kind of rich yet drab brown tone.
The double kasuri pattern is that of the traditional well crib or igeta pattern in two different sizes.
This kimono is very wearable and is fairly lightweight. It is beautiful.
