A Length of Weft-Based Kasuri: Tortoiseshell

This is a lovely length of indigo dyed cotton kasuri weaving with a bold and soft graphic pattern of weft-based design. The repeat, geometric pattern is that of the tortoiseshell, a common motif in Japanese folk textiles and it confers a wish for long life.

This length was probably taken from a futon cover which was probably made for a bride's trousseau, hence the auspiciously woven pattern.

The length was worn hard as there are three mending stitches on the reverse side.

A beautiful length of kasuri cloth.
