A Length of Boldly Designed Cotton Kasuri: Traditional Well Crib Motif

$80.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
54" x 13 1/2", 137 cm x 34 cm

This is a length of indigo dyed kasuri cloth that is hand woven from hand spun cotton yarns. It shows a repeat pattern of the traditional and often-seen motif of the well crib which is shown in two staggered, vertical rows.

The well crib images sit within the framework of a plaid design of orangeish colored lines. More than likely this length was woven in a kasuri weaving center called Kurume in Kyushu which produces distinctive looking designs in woven cotton.

No noticeable flaws or damage.
