A Length of Striped Cotton Cloth: Very Attractive Dense Area of Patching
early twentieth century
48" x 12 3/4", 122 cm x 32.5 cm
This length of cloth was taken from what appears to be a kimono that was probably reworked to become a futon cover.
The hand woven base cloth is a dark ground with narrow, warp-directional light stripes. What makes this boro length so interesting is the pile-up of patches at the top of the length: they are crammed together and layered in a way that is wonderful to see.
The patching is seen on the rest of the length as well: the mid-section and bottom are both patched, but not as richly as what we see at the top.
This length is full of visual interest and its age and the quality that it is hand woven are pluses.
Beautiful.
