A Length of Hemp or Ramie Very Old Cloth: Sankuzushi

$40.00 USD

late 19th century
49 1/2" x 13", 125. 5 cm x 33 cm

This is a length of hand woven hemp or ramie cloth that shows a small, basket weave-like pattern called sankuzushi. This type of woven design was very popular in the early to mid nineteenth century and countless variants on this pattern can be seen.

This one is made from yarns in neutral tones of white, grey and black, the effect is subtle and textural.

The length is hand stitched from two pieces and there is one small mending patch which can be seen on the accompanying detail photos.

A sophisticated weave for its color and design, this was probably taken from a kimono.
