This traditional garment is a han juban or half-under kimono. It is made from a curious mix of untraditional Japanese cloth.
The bodice is of cotton flannel, a fabric that was imported to Japan in the late 19th century; the sleeves are of a very thin, mousseline wool: again, wool is not native to Japan but became a popular cloth in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century onward. The sleeves are lined in cotton, and being made of very thin wool, there are some slight holes due to moths and some tears due to wear and age.
The flannel bodice is in intact and very good condition--and this unusual combination of plaid cloth and patterned sleeves is a lovely mix-up of designs.
