A Dark Length of Cotton Boro: Thick White Stitches

$85.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
75" x 12 1/2", 190.5 cm x 31.5 cm

This long, narrow piece of indigo dyed cotton boro cloth was taken from a futon cover.  It appears that the very dark indigo colored cloth--woven from very narrow stripes--was taken from a kimono that was broken down and re-assembled to form a futon cover or a kind of duvet.

What is lovely about this particular length of boro cloth is the graphic play of the very dark base cloth against the bold, white mending stitches which are applied using a thick, white cotton sashiko thread.

The white thread serves as a kind of drawing against the dark ground and in this lies the appeal of this lovely piece of boro cotton.

A beauty.
