Three Small Pieces of Katazome Patterns: Unusual and Beautiful
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
three together as shown: 27 1/2" x 13", 70 cm 33 cm
This is a vibrant group of three unusual katazome dyed cotton patterns, each a narrow piece from a larger bolt but each showing a large scale design which is dyed onto hand woven, hand spun cotton.
The top two patterns are oversized, stylized chrysanthemums that are so charmingly depicted that it is almost impossible not to be taken by them.
The brown toned piece on the bottom is wonderful for its color and its pattern that shows rain capes, butterflies and arabesques.
This is a really delightful suite of not-often-seen patterns which are presented here in hopes someone who collects katazome or admires this technique will want to own them.
