A Very Long Piece of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Rare Clematis Pattern
early twentieth century
136" x 13", 345.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a deeply toned, indigo dyed cotton length of katazome cloth that shows what appears to be a fairly often seen pattern, that of flowers. Its generous length is a detail of great note.
This flower pattern is interesting because it is rarely seen on katazome designs, it is a clematis.
The cloth is still sturdy: the colors are still strong, almost as they were when it was originally dyed a hundred years ago.
The flowers are rendered with a kind of joyful simplicity which, when viewed against the background of countless small dots, makes their appeal even more so.
A good piece of cloth for its lovely design which is made even better by its good condition, rare image and extra length.
