A Tiny Pair of a Child's Boro Tabi: Patched and Mended
early twentieth century
each: 5 1/2" x 3" x 3 1/4", 14 cm x 7.5 cm x 8 cm
This absolutely adorable and tiny--and rare--pair of heavily stitched and mended tabi belonged to quite a small and young child.
The small pair is hand stitched from hand spun, hand woven indigo dyed cotton and there is obvious evidence of patching and reinforcement to each of the two small split toe socks.
By noting the length of the stitches in relation to the size of the tabi you can understand just how small this pair is.
The pair is obviously well-worn as it has been mended over and again, and even on the patched areas we see abrasion which is proof of continued use.
This is a small treasure and a delightful addition to any collection of textiles.
Very recommended.
