A Small Fragment of 19th Century Hand Spun Cotton Katazome: Insects!
mid to late 19th century
12" x 12 3/4", 30.5 cm x 32.5 cm
This wonderful little fragment of hand spun, hand woven katazome dyed cotton shows a rich color combination of over-dyed indigo or green and a rust tone. The rust tone was probably achieved using an iron oxide pigment derived dye called bengara in Japan.
The pattern on this fragment is hard to see but when you are able to pay attention it is marvelous. It is composed of umbrellas, grasshoppers, crickets and dragonflies!
So delightful.
The condition as you can see is used and worn but the age--probably late Edo period or mid 19th century--and the pattern make this something covetable.
Recommended.
