A Short Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Intriguing Design of Arrow Feathers

late nineteenth century

This short length of indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth is presented for its rare and intriguing design. The pattern is that of octagons and squares with the unusual inclusion of a fan of stylized arrow feathers filling the inside of the octagons. At the center of the octagons and the squares is a stylized chrysanthemum.

Interesting as well is that the entire design is composed of small dots which gives a lightness of feeling to the otherwise crowded pattern.

This is a wonderfully hard-to-find design and its rarity is a visual pleasure.
