A Patched Resist Dyed Length: Graphic Appeal
late nineteenth century
63 1/2" x 12 3/4", 161 cm x 32.5 cm
This is a length of very nice hand spun, hand woven cotton that has been resist dyed with boldly graphic roundels. On this fragment, one roundel is shown in full; there are two resist dyed stacks of kanji or Chinese characters.
There are three applied cotton mending patches on this length, one of them a beautifully complex fragment of katazome cotton.
The cotton shows an overall patina from wear, which helps to reveal the lovely hand spun nature of the cotton yarns, always an important detail when collecting Japanese folk textiles.
A really lovely length of cloth with a very nice pattern and good age.
