A Long Piece of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Cranes as Roundels

$95.00 USD

early twentieth century
71" x 13 1/2", 180.25 cm x 34.25 cm

This good, long piece of indigo dyed katazome cotton shows a repeat pattern of stylized chrysanthemums and cranes designed as roundels.

The images are set against a background of arabesques and a field of small white dots. The centers of the chrysanthemums and the breast feathers of the cranes both are enhanced by the presence of an orange-colored dye which was derived from iron oxide.

The indigo is still deep and rich in tone and the cloth itself is nicely and heavily woven.

The generous length is in good, used condition and the dyes are still strong.

Very nice.
