A Long Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Paulownia Flowers as Roundels
$95.00 USD
early twentieth century
65 1/4" x 12 1/2", 165.5 cm x 31.75 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed katazome cotton that shows a repeat pattern of large-scale roundels that are composed of paulownia flowers. The background is a field of arabesque, the vines punctuated with small, stylized chrysanthemums.
The indigo tone reads almost-black and the length, although used, is still in good condition with just very slight light fading. It is still bright and with good tonal contrast.
The length of this piece of handsome katazome cotton is generous and the the treatment of the paulownia bloom as a roundel is inventive.
