A Length of Two Joined Katazome Pieces: Two Patterns

$85.00 USD

early twentieth century
35 1/2" x 13 1/2", 90 cm x 34 cm

This is a length of katazome dyed cotton that is hand stitched from two pieces, each with a different pattern.

The pattern on the top shows a conglomeration of motifs each of which is conveys a wish for long life: the crane (pictured as roundel), the stylized tortoiseshell design around the crane, the pine branches, all depict symbols for long life. Likewise, the crane and pine also signify conjugal fidelity since cranes mate for life and pine needles fall in pairs.

The pattern on the bottom shows stylized chrysanthemums amid a field of arabesque, a rather well-seen design.

The combination of both designs as shown here is attractive and very traditionally Japanese.
