A Length of Striped Cotton: Futon Cover Section
early twentieth century
58" x 13 1/2", 147 cm x 34 cm
This beautifully hand woven length of cotton shows a handsome design of woven stripes.
Wide striped cloth like this type was plentiful in old Japan because it was woven to be fashioned into futon covers. Not enough attention is given to Japan's old striped cottons but they are beautifully designed and wonderfully executed as this one is.
On this length we see a mirror image of stripes, two complex designs sitting next to each other on a deep indigo ground.
The colors are still rich and bright and the quality of the cotton is strong.
A beautiful length of hand woven cotton from old Japan.
