A Length of Rustic Katazome Dyed Cotton: Inky Indigo and Bold Pattern
early twentieth century
28" x 13 1/2", 71 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of rustic, katazome dyed cotton that shows a bold repeat pattern. The design seems to be a large-scale, high-contrast version of faux kasuri.
The repeat pattern is a bit rudimentary in its presentation with slightly out of scale white designs to the deep, indigo dyed background.
This kind of rustic resist dyed cotton has all sorts of charm and this kind of charm is the allure of these country textiles.
As can be seen there is some seepage of the indigo dye into the resisted white areas, and again, this kind of imperfection offers visual interest to those who appreciate this type of aesthetic.
