A Length of Resist Dyed Cotton: One-half Large Mon
ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century
58" x 13", 146.25 cm x 33 cm
This is wonderful piece of beautifully hand loomed cotton which is woven from hand spun cotton yarns and which is dyed a deep, blue-black indigo color.
The piece seems to have been taken from a kimono and it shows a large, one-half mon which is dyed using a stencil; it is resisted with rice paste. When looking carefully at the mon, you will notice extremely faint, stray areas of dye that migrated to the white, undyed area of the cloth.
A rich length of old, hand loomed cloth, and a really lovely textile from old Japan.
Beautiful for its ito aji or thread flavor.
