A Length of Resist Dyed Cotton: Hanten or Happi
mid twentieth century
42" x 13", 106.5 cm x 33 cm
This length of resist dyed, power loomed cotton is taken from a happi or a kind of festival coat or uniform work wear. It is stencil dyed and shows a bold depiction of the often seen motif called tatewaku, sometimes referred to as "rising steam."
This panel would have been the back of a happi and the orange-colored motif at the top, left of the panel would have been seen in full, of course, when the happi was fully constructed or intact.
Although the cotton is not hand loomed it still has a nice, almost drapey feel in the hand.
This length shows good graphics and very nice color. Some wear from use but in good, used condition.
