A Length of Pieced Katazome Cotton: Tasseled Coiled Ropes

$85.00 USD
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
18 3/4" x 37 1/4", 47.5 cm x 94.5 cm

This is a treasure: this length of katazome dyed cotton shows a desirable and attractive design, that of a repeat pattern of ropes.

The horizontally-oriented piece is hand stitched from four separate fragments and there are three areas of stitched mending to the surface. On the back of these mending areas is a patch, one for each area of stitching.

The fanciful placement of the tasseled, coiled ropes within the structure of the repeated design is beautiful. The overall mood of the piece is light hearted.  This kind of pattern immediately draws one's attention as it is visually alluring.

The pattern also speaks to us of traditional design in old Japan, and shows how beautifully everyday objects can be transformed into a wonderfully memorable design.

A collectible katazome pattern resist dyed onto fairly lightweight but seemingly hand spun, hand woven cloth. There is overall fading which helps to reveal the nice quality cotton yarns that have been woven to create this length of old cotton.
