A Length of Pieced Katazome Cotton: Hand Spun Yarns
early twentieth century
71" x 13", 180.5 cm x 33 cm
This quite long length of indigo dyed katazome cotton is in fact three separate pieces stitched up the center.
It shows an often-seen pattern of chrysanthemums against a background of arabesque; the white-on-blue type of katazome dyeing is more prevalent than blue-on-white.
What is extra-nice about this length is the good quality of the cloth: it is hand woven from hand-spun cotton yarns. The tactile sense from this aspect of the cloth is a desirable trait in old folk textiles.
Generous in length this is a versatile length of very good katazome cloth with a wonderful pattern and great yarns.
