A Length of Patched Resist Dyed Cotton: Dramatic Mend
mid twentieth century, possibly contemporary
43" x 13 3/4", 109 cm x 35 cm
This length of indigo dyed katazome cotton shows one pattern in two iterations: one is blue and white and one is blue on blue.
The blue and white pattern can be seen on the large patch on the top of the panel; its darker toned relative takes up most of the length.
The pattern is an interesting one: it shows bamboo with stylized snowflakes that are embellished with kanji or Chinese characters.
It is unclear why the same pattern appears in two different tonal moods but the effect this gives is lovely overall.
An aesthetically interesting pairing of patterns done with hand stitching and an attempt to match the repeat.
