A Length of Patched Katazome Cotton: Vibrant Pattern and Repair
early twentieth century
75 3/4" x 13 1/4", 192.5 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a length of pieced and patched, indigo dyed cotton. The pattern is that of large, peony-like invented flowers amid a dazzling thicket of arabesque. The design which is basically indigo dye also shows greys and blacks which add to the shimmering effect of the pattern.
The length is made of two pieces which are hand stitched together. There are several patches applied to the surface of this length, some of which are in high contrast to the base cloth while others are made of the base cloth itself and therefore are visually quite subtle.
This is an extra long piece of old boro cloth and one that is crowded with beautiful visual information: quite a joy to look at.
Delightful.
