A Length of Patched Jishiro Katazome: Blue on White Pattern
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
42" x 13 1/4", 106.5 cm x 33.5 cm
This length of indigo dyed katazome cotton shows a delicate blue-on-white pattern. In Japan, this blue-on-white katazome design is referred to as jishiro.
The design is light in the sense that it is made of a background of very stringy, narrow, vertical stripes on which can be seen starburst-like images, perhaps stylized pine needles. This is an unusual pattern, and an attractive one.
Note the two, hand stitched patches to the cloth--also jishiro katazome--as well as the coin-sized faint grey colored stain, also pictured here on the detail photos that accompany this post.
This is a very nice length of old cotton with an unusually interesting repeat pattern.
