This is a length of hemp or ramie cloth that has been dyed a pale blue tone using the katazome method.
The length is generously long and the softly rendered repeat pattern of phoenixes and paulownia is large in scale relative to the proportions of the length.
The panel shown here no doubt originated as part of a summer futon cover and its light color tones and playful pattern suggest a cooling mood that makes this right for summer.
In good, used condition with no distracting flaws, this is a beautifully designed length of old bast fiber cloth.
