A Length of Old Katazome: Complex Design and Two Good Sides

$145.00 USD

late nineteenth century
60" x 13", 152.5 cm x 33 cm

This length of old, indigo dyed katazome cotton is hand woven from hand spun cotton yarns. The texture of the cloth is beautifully revealed by the patina from wear which has faded the surface to better reveal the woven structure of the cotton.

The pattern is a rich one of highly designed circles within a grid. In the center of each circle is a stylized chrysanthemum. The "grid" seems to suggest the stylized wisteria motif. As is fairly noticeable there is faded orange color that highlights the design. This is benibana or safflower. As this dye is light fugitive it often softens with time and wear.

The back of the piece is equally interesting as it shows about 9 patches in beautiful arrangement.

This is a gorgeous length of katazome cotton made even nice by its rich age.

Recommended.
