A Length of Magnificent Katazome Dyed Cotton: Cranes Two Ways
late nineteenth century
35" x 13", 89 cm x 33 cm
This length of indigo dyed katazome cotton showing cranes in flight is wildly beautiful and is rare in its depiction of these auspicious birds. The setting of the mostly-white cranes cut out and starkly set against a deeply blue background is inspired design.
Notice the almost anatomically precise rendering of some of the cranes versus the brushy, suggestive quality of the others. This contrast of depiction in the service of visual beauty is pure artistry of the most sophisticated kind.
It is rare to find a katazome pattern of this visual power and singularity of vision.
Much can be said of this field of swooping and playful birds but it is probably better to just enjoy this exceedingly beautiful pattern and let your imagination occupy this wonderfully designed and executed design.
Good, used condition with some ingrained creases from wear.
Highly recommended.
