A Length of Large Scale Katazome Cranes: Stylized

$95.00 USD

early twentieth century
56" x 13", 142 cm x 33 cm

This is a length of katazome dyed cotton that shows a pattern of large-scale cranes depicted more or less in a flipped, mirror image.

The cranes are animatedly drawn in great detail and they somehow convey a kind of life force in the way they are depicted.

The cranes are set against a stark background that includes images of highly stylized pine trees. Note, too, the coloration of the images which are enriched with grey and dull reddish tones.

Cranes in Japanese design signify a wish for a long life and, as cranes mate for life, they also are a symbol of conjugal fidelity. The stylized pines are also symbols of long life and marital happiness: pine needles fall in pairs.

A charming length of folk cloth, this is packed with symbolism and good intentions--and also has rich visual appeal.

Just wonderful.
