A Length of Large Scale Cotton Katazome: Cranes and Tortoises
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
46 1/2" x 13 1/2", 118 cm x 34 cm
What an exciting design on this length of indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth--we see a repeat pattern of large-scale tortoises and cranes.
They are boldly rendered in a stark yet shimmering white-on-blue pattern, the indigo being very dark and inky--almost black--which makes the repeat images stand out beautifully.
Both the crane and the tortoise are symbols that convey a wish for longevity. This type of auspicious motif is often found on bedding--this was taken from a futon cover--and because of the auspicious means conveyed by the motifs shown on this cloth, this tortoise/crane combination is often imprinted on textiles that make up part of a bridal trousseau.
The length is in good condition with little or no noticeable light fading and little to no surface abrasion.
This kind of imagistic, large-scale pattern is not often seen-- and this is a good one.
