A Length of Katazome Dyed Crepe Cotton: Autumn Grasses
early twentieth century
49 3/4" x 12 /12", 126.5 cm x 32 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed katazome cotton, the cotton is a bit unusual for its slightly crinkled, crepe texture.
Not only is weave of the cotton slightly unusual, so is the pattern.
Its theme is something rarely seen on textile designs which is that of susuki one of the traditional "seven flowers or autumn." It is a lovely pattern and it offers a design that appears light, almost feathery, which perfectly captures the wispy nature of the Japanese susuki.
The is a cluster of stains, shown on the detail photograph which, in person, are hard to see. There is overall faint light fading to the length due to wear over time; this length was more than likely taken from a kimono.
A not-often-seen pattern this is a delicately designed one that has emits an airy feeling.
