A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Chrysanthemum and Paulownia
early twentieth century
44 1/2" x 13 1/2", 113 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth, the pattern showing a long repeated row of stylized chrysanthemums and a long row of what appear to be paulownia blossoms. The background of the overall repeat pattern is decorated with arabesques.
The length has faded a bit and shows some surface patina.
The intensity of the indigo areas have dulled a bit from wear. There are also some smudges to the indigo and some quite serious fading to the orange dyed highlights which have all but disappeared from this length.
The pattern is a lively one and it depicts two often-seen flower images in a highly stylized manner.
