A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Stylized Chrysanthemums
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
55" x 13 1/4", 139.7 cm x 33.65 cm
This length of katazome dyed cotton is hand woven from hand spun cotton yarns, the pattern is one of highly stylized chrysanthemums of two types against a field of arabesque.
The indigo has faded or oxidized to a soft grey-blue tone. The fading and the soft, overall surface abrasion is beautiful in the way it brings out or enhances the presence of the hand spun cotton yarns.
At the top of the length is a hand stitched "patch" of old, striped, cotton which is a lovely, subtle contrast to the floral pattern of the length.
Charming, this length shows very nice, quite old, hand spun cotton yarns.
