A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Mirrored Cranes and Pine Needles
early twentieth century
28 1/2" x 13 1/2", 72.5 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton cloth that shows a bold pattern of cranes rendered as roundels. Stylized pine needles encircle the pairs of cranes.
Cranes symbolize long life and conjugal fidelity as cranes mate for life.
Pine trees, too, are symbols of the same two attributes, the reason for their symbolism of a good marriage is that pine needles fall in pairs, so this length of cloth--presumably taken from a futon cover that was offered as part of a bridal trousseau--holds deep symbolic meaning.
You can see one mended, patched area on the left, top portion and there is a dark stain on the roundel on the lower right, both shown in detail photos here.
