A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Large Scale and Bold Design
early twentieth century
39" x 12 3/4", 99 cm x 32.5 cm
This is a length of katazome dyed cotton that shows a large scale, delightfully loud pattern that is built on traditional motifs.
The core motif is that of large hexagons, the hexagon is visual shorthand for tortoise shell which in turn suggests the tortoise which carries with it the symbolism of long life. Inside the hexagons are highly stylized chrysanthemums--the chrysanthemums also appear at the junctures of the hexagons.
There is a good amount of a faded orange tone that adds life to this animated design. The condition overall is good and used with an even fading to the entire piece.
The design of the length is spirited and offers immediate visual satisfaction.
