A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Indian Style

$85.00 USD

early twentieth century
26 1/2" x 14 1/4", 67 cm x 36 cm

This is a length of indigo dyed katazome cotton that shows a rich and crowded pattern whose design seems based on Indian trade cloth.

The richness of the pattern is due to its wonderful, all over rendering of flowers and this is further enhanced by the judicious use of grey toned dye that is used to tint the flowers.

The cloth is in good, used condition with no obvious flaws and with still-crisp colors. Its nod of the head to Indian trade cloth is a wonderful detail and shows that Japanese craftsman and collectors admired the cloth exported from India.
